Now that the weather is getting colder, people are going to be spending more time indoors. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing if you like staying in a warm and cozy house, but you do need to be aware of your house’s air quality. There will come a time very soon when it will be too cold to open a window whenever you need some fresh air, so here are some simple tips that you can do that will keep indoor air pollution to a minimum.
Your HVAC system has a filter that should be cleaned or replaced regularly. While some high-quality filters can last for up to nine months without being replaced, cheaper filters often need to be changed monthly. In fact, changing your air filter every month is just good practice if you want to keep the air in your home as clean as possible. Most disposable air filters are inexpensive enough that you should be able to fit it into your budget, and replacing your filter is a simple operation.
Keeping your home clean can go a long way towards improving its air quality. Not only does a weekly cleaning regimen remove dust and grime that would otherwise get into the air, but it also declutters your home and removes places where dust can hide. Sweep and dust hard surfaces and vacuum carpets at least once a week, and keep clutter to a minimum. All of this goes double for common areas that get the most foot traffic.
Speaking of foot traffic, make it a rule to take off your shoes when you enter your home. Shoes track in a lot of dirt and dust that can settle into carpets and all but ruin your home’s air quality as well as your floors.
If you really have problems with air quality in your home, you can always invest in an air purifier. An air purifier removes dust, mold spores, pet dander, and other pollutants from the surrounding air. They are generally inexpensive compared to a home HVAC system, and they are small and portable enough to fit into practically any room.
